Shelton CT Locksmith: What To Do To Prevent Lockouts

When you find yourself locked out, you feel stressed and sometimes even panicked. You don’t want to have to wait around for help to arrive, and even if you know you have access to 24/7 emergency assistance, it can be a bit daunting. Everyone has a lot on their plate every single day, so the last thing we need is to get locked out of our own property. If you have ever experienced a lockout, you know how stressful it is. But we are here to go over things to do to prevent lockouts from ever occurring in the first place. We are Shelton CT Locksmith and we serve customers in Shelton, Connecticut – we have helped many people who were locked out of their property and now we want to help you to prevent this from happening to you!

It’s easy to forget things throughout the day when there is so much to do. Maybe today, you had to drop the kids off at school, stop by the office, and meet up with a friend to catch up because it’s been quite some time. In addition, you had to go to the grocery store and then you realized you’re out of paper towels, so you had to make another trip out to the store. Unfortunately, at some point, you realized you locked your keys in your car. It happens! A locksmith will be able to help you get back in. But what can you do to prevent lockouts from happening to begin with? Take a look…

  • Go keyless! If you have a difficult time keeping track of things, it might be a good idea for you to go keyless. This way, you can get into your vehicle, or even your place of work or home without having to keep track of a key. Let’s face it – sometimes, we just want convenience and sometimes, going without a key just makes things easier. Keyless entry systems are available at various price points, so you are sure to be able to find one that suits your needs.
  • Have a mantra. Yes, it is a good idea to have some sort of mantra that you repeat to yourself. For example, when you get out of your car, if you are not using keys with a working battery, make sure the keys are physically in your hand before you press the button to manually lock the door. You can say something in your head that you will remember before exiting the vehicle, like, “car keys, car keys” or you can just get into the habit of having the keys in your hand as soon as you shut the car off.
  • Make sure a neighbor has a copy of your key. While some might opt to keep a spare key under their front door mat, many are choosing not to do this anymore because at some point, it became predictable. Some people buy decorations they put on their patio or even behind their home, and they hide a key with these decorations so they are out of plain sight and in an unexpected place. If you don’t trust any of your neighbors enough to give them a spare key, consider giving a copy to a trusted family member that lives in the area. This way, if you ever get locked out, you have a way to get back in and you don’t have to pay a professional to come out to help you.
  • Keep an extra key on you. If you carry around a purse, you can keep an extra key in one of your compartments. If you typically have one house key on your keyring, maybe keep an extra key in the glove compartment of your vehicle. You can even keep a spare key in your desk at work. There are quite a few places that you can keep an extra key, and you can even keep it on you so that you always have it.
  • Another option is to have a wireless keypad installed outside of your garage, because you could hide a key inside of the garage. Of course, you should make sure to have a battery back up in the event of a power failure, because you wouldn’t want the door to fail to open.
  • You could also hide a house key inside of a gutter. Tape it in there so that it will stay even during a rainstorm. This is a place a burglar would not be too likely to check for a spare key.

Remember, if you do get locked out, the solution is simple – you just need to call a locksmith! Of course, be sure to check your back door first, and check to make sure you can’t get in through the garage before you panic. If you are locked out of your car, don’t break open a window unless it is an emergency situation! And if you get locked out of the office, don’t stress out and assume that you are going to miss all of your important meetings and deadlines for the day. If you have realized that you are definitely locked out, with no way of getting back in short of breaking open a window, give a local locksmith a call. If you are in our service area, we would be more than happy to help you. It’s always a good idea to have a locksmith’s number saved in your phone so that you can reach them fast in the event of an emergency, like a lockout. Locksmiths tend to be available 24 hours a day, every day of the week, including holidays to help with situations such as this. Just go with someone licensed and insured, and you can rest assured that you will be in good hands.

We hope you have a better idea of how to prevent lockouts and we hope that this information will work to help you in the future!
